Erin's starter diet |
This is an introductory diet for the many children who have a chronic inflamed digestive tract.
"One of the many things I am learning from dealing with children that have a long and painful history of fits is that they have a chronic inflamed digestive tract. As digestion and assimilation is the only path back to health, elimination of foods that contribute to the malfunction of the digestive system is a must. Hence items out of the Erin's Diet have been selected to make up the Starter Diet for children that do not digest cereal well.
" Breaking the vicious cycle by Elaine Gottschall BA MSc is the source of this information, for those parents that would like to know more about the scientific evidence behind it. Not all food items mentioned in that book can be eaten with the Starter Diet, as we have to take into consideration Dr Wiley's principles, and also that these children are over-run by unfriendly pathogens, and can not handle anything sweet at this point.
"Starter diet for cereal intolerant children
"Fish, beef, poultry, pork (very lean) and vegetables - broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cucumber, eggplant (baked), garlic, kale, onions, turnips.
"These can be cooked as stir fry's, soups, stews, etc (no raw vegetables at first)
"It is a good idea to make your own soup stock with bones from beef or poultry organically raised, or fish. Use garlic (broil the meat with it) a dash of curry, or a pinch of herbs to add flavour.
"If you do this for a few days you will be able to tell how much the food eaten influences fits and digestion, then you can start adding some more variety from the full diet.
"Remove any food that you think your child does not tolerate.
"Drink only and plenty of water.
"Supplements
"Before each meal:
"Swedish Bitters, 1 teaspoon in a glass of water (never give undiluted)
Give 10 to 20 minutes before the meal. Avoid the one that contains honey.
"With meal:
"Digestive enzymes, 1 capsule (whole or sprinkled on the food.). Follow
the directions on label.
"Flax seed oil, 1 teaspoon to 1/2 tablespoon, as tolerated. (It comes in dark bottles dated and to be kept in the fridge) - never heat essential fatty acids.
"After meal:
"Multivitamin, 1 capsule (gel capsules are preferred, these need to be
taken 2 or 3 times a day)
"Acidophilus, 1 capsule (Natural Factor's Protec or Caldophilus). Not with FOS or Culture media, which is sweet.
"Efalex Focus or Efamol evening primrose oil, 2 to 6 capsules as tolerated.
"Kyolic liquid garlic, 1/2 to 1teaspoon (not oil).
"Cod liver oil, 1 capsule (only with breakfast and dinner).
"Caprylic Acid, 1 capsule (Natural Factors or Nu-Life 350 mg, or other).
"Notes
"These quantities are for a child from 4 to 10 years old. Some adjustment is needed for younger or older children.
"Multivitamin and digestive enzymes - follow the dosage on the label.
"Make sure your digestive enzyme is a full spectrum digestive, containing lipase, amylase, and protease.
"Essential fatty acids as tolerated, means that the body needs them to get better, but oils are also alkaline, so too much may increase fits despite the fact that they constitute the major deficiency in the body and are desperately needed to get well.
"Start the caprylic acid 2 weeks into the diet, to give a smoother detoxification period. This is an anti-fungal agent that destroys the candida organism. Organisms such as these can establish themselves in the gut and, either consume the much needed nutrients delivered, or prevent them from being absorbed (by damaging the gut lining) - thus continuing the state of malnutrition.
"If constipation and or loose stools still presents a problem after removing cereal from the diet, a colon cleanser like Psyllium-Bentonite-Caproil is indicated.
